Cultivating an Indigenous Humanity

Santa Cruz, CA offers many locally grown and organic options to the people who live here. However, between high prices at the farmer's markets, gas prices, pollution, and general traffic you have to sit through, for you $100 bag of produce, you might think about what produce you have available in your local neighborhoods. Not only do you get the Vitamin D and exercise from your walk through your community, but you the opportunity to partake in the nutritional benefits of eating fruits and veggies right off the vine, from "source to mouth. "

On my 25th birthday, I took a stroll through my neighborhood, the Jewel Box, in Capitola, CA. Along my path, I discovered a wild blackberry bush, and could not pass up the opportunity to receive such an abundant gift from the land on my be-earthday. While on the same trek I found a community garden at Jade St. Park. Blocks from my home I discovered not only the yummy berries, but an entire community garden. Anyone who lives in the Jewell box has the opportunity to hold a garden plot to grow, eat, or trade produce with one another.

You've heard of the triple bottom line, "People, planet, profit," well think of the Indigenous Arts Alliance's intention as creating the forth line, "power." We boost our capabilities as one indigenous humanity. We unite to empower, and stward a thriving, "People, planet, profit, and power," model for our future. Let's decrease our dependencey on a governmental power like welfare, and we take the welfare of humanity back into our hearts and actions. We cooperate now to share the gifts we have today.

Just on walk in my neighborhood and I found a cornucopia of abundance. What kind of indigenous renewable resources flourish in your community? Think of local humans, plants, or water resources near you, who you may engage in to empower an indigenous community in you neighborhood. Let's live our indigenous humanity today by sharing here on the
